Objectives of the Project:
In Nepal, 85 percent of the economy is based on traditional agricultural methods that can’t properly feed its people. Our project will improve Nepal’s agricultural production through introducing more nutritious crops of fruits, nuts and vegetables that are suited to the local climate and soil conditions and supplemented through better water collection and distribution methods. With the Rotary Clubs of Kathmandu and Kathmandu Heights (provisional club) overseeing the project and with expertise from Sanskriti Farms & Research Centre (a sustainable farming model), new forms of sustainable agriculture will raise the standard of living for the under-nourished in a country that’s desperately trying to improve the lives of its people. Current rates of disease and malnutrition are high in Nepal, especially in rural areas where this project will be based. Selected families will plant different crops that have been determined by Sanskriti Farms & Research Centre, a model farm, to be best suited to these mid lands of Nepal. With training in the use of greenhouses, water management, and the necessary materials supplied to them, sustainable livelihoods will be developed. Once production allows, a local Farmers’ Market will be developed to promote and sell produce for the community and build economic capacity. This will reduce the need for importing food from outside the country, saving money for other agricultural investments and improvements. It will also help to address the high food prices and the limited access to nutritious food supplies at the local level.
